Biography

Alex Hanover is a Monégasque-German writer. Her debut novel is forthcoming.

She is a contributing writer for Revue Passager, a bilingual literary travel review, and writes an intimate newsletter on Substack about books, art and culture.

She holds a B.A. in Philosophy and Global Liberal Studies from New York University and an M.A. in History and Literature from Columbia University. Her master’s thesis examined the reception of J.D. Salinger’s Glass stories, arguing that the later work departed from the modernism of the early stories toward a digressive style anticipating postmodernism — what David Lodge termed "pre-postmodernism." Drawing on Martha Nussbaum’s ethical literary theory, it read that shift as an ethical one, in form as much as content, turning on the central question of the Glass stories: "How should one live?"

She is inspired by California and its artistic export, Whit Stillman movie dialogue, midcentury books written by men, gothic literature written by women, out-of-print Hollywood memoirs that force one to suspend one’s critical thinking, and nostalgic narratives of early childhood impressions.

She is fluent in English, French and German. In her free time she likes to walk her dachshund, go on runs, read novellas, and watch video essays.
